The Evolution of China Railway Vacuum Toilet Systems: A 40-Year Journey of Sanitation Transformation

China’s railway vacuum toilet system development is a remarkable story of independent innovation, environmental upgrading, and passenger experience improvement, which has completely rewritten the history of rail sanitation across the world’s largest railway network.

Phase 1: The Open-Discharge Era (Before 2000)

In the early stage of China’s railway development, almost all passenger trains were equipped with simple open-discharge toilets, where waste was directly released onto the tracks. This design caused severe pollution along railway lines, accelerated track corrosion, and forced trains to lock all toilets once they pulled into stations. For decades, passengers had to face muddy, smelly lavatories, especially during the annual Spring Festival travel rush when trains were heavily overloaded, making train toilets a well-known "nightmare" for travelers.

Phase 2: Technology Introduction & Initial Popularization (2000-2007)

China launched its first round of toilet renovation on passenger trains at the beginning of the 21st century. After the 2003 SARS outbreak, the Ministry of Railways formally put forward the "zero pollution discharge" requirement, greatly accelerating the promotion of sealed collection toilet systems.

In 2004, vacuum retention toilet units were officially applied on 25G and 25T type passenger cars. Each carriage was fitted with a 550-liter independent waste tank at both ends, which could support 36 hours of continuous train operation without emptying. At this stage, most core technologies still relied on imported international products, and China had no independent R&D capacity in this field.

Phase 3: Independent Breakthrough & High-Speed Rail Standardization (2007-2017)

2007 was a landmark year for China’s railway vacuum toilet industry. A team of Chinese engineers launched full independent R&D work, breaking the long-term foreign monopoly on core vacuum toilet technology.

When the Beijing-Tianjin Intercity Railway, China’s first high-speed line, opened in 2008, vacuum flush toilets became a mandatory standard configuration for all CRH "Hexie" EMUs. The waste tank capacity for EMUs was upgraded to 770 liters, 40% larger than that of ordinary passenger cars.

In 2012, compact vacuum toilet units were widely deployed across the network. This integrated design combined ejectors, water boosters and intermediate tanks inside the toilet body, featuring lower noise, easier installation and simpler maintenance. By 2017, China’s self-developed vacuum toilet technology had obtained official national invention patents, marking the full realization of 100% domestic independent control of the entire industrial chain.

Phase 4: Smart Upgrading & Full Network Coverage (2018 to Present)

All Fuxing high-speed trains are now fully equipped with China’s self-developed vacuum toilet systems. The 304 stainless steel waste tanks are coated with anti-corrosion layers, fitted with dual sealing rings, and equipped with electric heating and automatic liquid level monitoring sensors, ensuring stable operation in temperatures ranging from -40°C to 40°C.

By 2024, China’s 48,000-kilometer high-speed rail network, the largest in the world, recorded 4.085 billion passenger trips, all supported by domestic vacuum collection systems. The country has also built a nationwide smart waste treatment scheduling system, which optimizes suction operations through big data, raising equipment utilization rate from 60% to 85%.

Today, nearly all high-speed trains, EMUs, 25T type direct express trains and newly built fast trains in China are equipped with vacuum flush toilets. Each flush only consumes 0.5 to 1 liter of water, with waste flowing at 15 meters per second in pipelines, completely eliminating odor leakage and track pollution. This transformation is a core part of China’s broader "toilet revolution" in public transport, delivering a clean, comfortable travel experience for billions of passengers every year.
